A summary of the story and lesson:
Who was Gideon?
Known as the greatest judge of Israel, we may be surprised to find a timid ruler. In fact, when we first meet him, he is hiding from the enemies on a threshing floor. There, an angel calls him a mighty warrior and tells Gideon that God is sending him to lead the fight against the Midianites to save Israel.
How did Gideon react to Gods challenge?
Although at first Gideon doubts his ability to do so, he is heartened that God will be with him in this mission. Seeking reassurance from the Lord, Gideon requests God to prove His promise to save Israel, using a wool fleece. God does as Gideon asks to make Gideon rely on Him.
How did God use Gideon to save Israel?
When God tells Gideon to bring an army to take on the enormous Midianite army, he brings 32,000 men. But God has other plans. God makes Gideon send home any soldier who is afraid, and after that, those also who kneel down at the stream to drink. Gideon is left with just 300 men. Gideon now knows he must rely only on God to provide a miracle.
But God has an even greater plan in place. Gideon overhears a dream of one of the Midianites that Israel would have victory. The 300 soldiers did not even have to attack the men in the Midianite camp. By just hearing the sound of blaring trumpets and smashing jars, the Midianites end up killing each other in the chaos.
When the Israelites want to honor him as their king for triumphing over their enemies and restoring Israel’s pride, Gideon, recognizing God as the real victor in the battle, says “No”.
What can we learn from Gideon’s Story?
1. God can work with a little bit of faith
We can learn that God can work through anyone, even timid believers of little faith. A leader does not always mean the boldest and bravest. When we are hiding from what scares us most, God compels us to tackle it head on.
2. But God wants us to trust Him
We can only hide on the threshing floor for so long, before God pulls us out of our comfort zones to do His amazing work. When He does so, we must rely on Him to do what we think is impossible.
You can do great and amazing things when you are called by God to a challenge. Remember, God is with you. Trust in God and He will show you the way
